Kraków is one of the easiest cities in Europe to photograph in. The Main Market Square, Wawel Hill, the Planty park and Kazimierz are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, and the historic centre came through the Second World War largely intact, so the stone, the churches and the cobbles are original. In a 60-minute session you can cover two or three different backdrops on foot.
The catch is the crowds. From late morning the square fills with horse carriages and guided groups, and Wawel has queues at the ticket office. The calm Kraków photos you see online are nearly always taken at sunrise or in places tourists skip: Zakrzówek, Krakus Mound, Tyniec.
Kraków is a favourite for a proposal photographer in Kraków, couple photoshoots during a city break and wedding photography in Kraków. If you want mountains as well, Zakopane is about two hours away.

Main Market Square (Rynek Główny) and the Cloth Hall
One of the largest medieval squares in Europe: the Renaissance Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), the two unequal towers of St Mary's Basilica, the Town Hall Tower and pastel houses all round. Every hour a trumpeter plays the hejnał bugle call from St Mary's tower, which makes a lovely cue for a proposal. The Cloth Hall arcades give shade and elegant arches.
- Best time
- Sunrise to about 8:00; sunrise is around 4:30 in June and 7:30 in December. Very busy after 10:00.
- Access
- A few minutes' walk from Kraków Główny station through the Planty and Floriańska Street. Pedestrian zone, cobbles.
- 02
Wawel and the Vistula boulevards
Wawel Hill, with the Royal Castle and the cathedral, rises above a bend in the Vistula, with the Wawel Dragon statue at its foot. The classic view is from the opposite bank in Dębniki, where golden-hour light hits the walls from the west. The arcaded courtyard is open to visitors, but the castle sets its own rules for photo sessions on the hill, so check them before booking.
- Best time
- Golden hour before sunset, seen from Dębniki; the boulevards are almost empty at sunrise.
- Access
- 10–15 minutes on foot from the square down Grodzka Street, or a tram to Wawel stop. Cross the Dębnicki Bridge to the far bank.
- 03
Kazimierz
The historic Jewish quarter, with Szeroka Street, its synagogues, Plac Nowy and its round market hall, and courtyards full of cafés. Peeling façades, old shop signs and murals give a raw, cinematic backdrop for couples and portraits. The Father Bernatek footbridge, with its acrobat sculptures, leads straight across the river to Podgórze.
- Best time
- Weekday mornings or late afternoon; Friday and Saturday nights are busy with nightlife.
- Access
- 15–20 minutes on foot from the square, or a tram to Miodowa or Plac Wolnica.
- 04
Planty park
A ring of park about four kilometres long, laid out where the medieval walls once stood. Benches, lamps, chestnut trees and a surviving stretch of fortifications with St Florian's Gate and the Barbican. Quiet green space a few steps from the square, easy with a pram and ideal for short sessions.
- Best time
- Spring and autumn, late afternoon; in October the leaves form a golden tunnel.
- Access
- It surrounds the whole Old Town, so you can join it anywhere. Paved paths.
- 05
Zakrzówek
A flooded former limestone quarry with turquoise water and white cliffs, a few kilometres from the centre. Since 2022 part of it has been a municipal bathing area with pontoons, while the paths over the Twardowski Rocks around it remain open to all. Nobody looking at the photos will guess it is Kraków. Check the bathing area's rules and any entry fees with the operator.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset, May to October; busy with swimmers on hot summer days.
- Access
- Tram to Rondo Grunwaldzkie or Kapelanka, then 15–20 minutes on foot. Rocky, uneven ground, so wear sensible shoes.
- 06
Krakus Mound (Kopiec Krakusa)
A prehistoric mound in Podgórze with a wide panorama over the city, Wawel and the Vistula. Grassy slopes and open sky make for light, airy images, and the old Liban quarry lies just below. It is one of the locals' favourite places to watch the sunset.
- Best time
- Sunset and blue hour; almost empty at sunrise.
- Access
- Tram towards Wielicka Street, then 10–15 minutes uphill. A steep grassy climb.
- 07
Tyniec Abbey
A Benedictine monastery on a limestone hill above the Vistula, about 12 kilometres from the centre. White walls, cliffs and the wide river give a calm, almost rural setting that is popular for wedding portrait sessions. Behave as you would in any monastery and ask about photography rules in the courtyard.
- Best time
- Afternoon and golden hour; fewest walkers in spring and autumn.
- Access
- Bus from near Rondo Grunwaldzkie (line 112) or by bike along the Vistula cycle path. A short climb at the end.

Seasons
April and May bring blossom along the Planty and moderate crowds. June to August gives long days and the bluest water at Zakrzówek, but the Old Town is at its busiest. September and October turn the Planty gold and soften the light, a favourite time for wedding portrait sessions. December brings the Christmas market on the square and festive lights, but very short days.
Time of day
Sunrise is the only time the Main Square and Grodzka Street are yours; in June that means around 4:30. Golden hour is at its best on the boulevards facing Wawel and on Krakus Mound; the sun sets around 20:50 in June and 15:40 in December. At midday, look for shade under the Cloth Hall arcades or in the Planty. A sunrise slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.
Weather
Kraków has warm summers with afternoon thunderstorms and cool, often grey winters. In autumn and winter the city can have smog, and mist in the Vistula valley; mist softens Wawel beautifully at dawn, but smog gives flat, dirty light, so check the air-quality forecast. In the rain, the Cloth Hall arcades, Kazimierz gateways and cloisters keep you dry. Cobbles get slippery in winter, so bring shoes with grip.
Getting there
Trains connect Kraków Airport (Balice) with Kraków Główny, and the Old Town starts a few minutes' walk from the station. The centre is pedestrian, so a session around the square, Wawel and Kazimierz is done on foot. Zakrzówek, Krakus Mound and Tyniec are a short tram or bus ride or a taxi away. Parking in the centre is paid and scarce; photographers usually meet you at the Barbican, below Wawel or on Plac Wolnica.
Good to know
A private session in public streets and squares does not normally need a permit. Wawel, Tyniec Abbey, churches and the Zakrzówek bathing area each have their own rules, so check the conditions for sessions (especially wedding and commercial shoots) with the operator. Drone flights over the Old Town and Wawel are restricted; check the rules well ahead. Prices start at PLN 500 for 30 minutes and PLN 750 for a couple session; proposals from PLN 950, wedding portrait sessions from PLN 1,500. See pricing for details.
- Book sunrise for an empty Main Square; in summer that means meeting before 5:00.
- Photograph Wawel from the Dębniki boulevards, not from the hill itself.
- Wear comfortable shoes for Zakrzówek and Krakus Mound and carry smarter ones in a bag.
- For a proposal, Krakus Mound at sunset or the boulevards at dawn give you privacy.
- In autumn, check the air-quality forecast; if smog is high, move the date.
- Pair the square with Kazimierz or Wawel, and Zakrzówek with Tyniec, to cut travel time.
