Lublin’s Old Town is compact, colourful and surprisingly calm for the historic centre of a large city. Narrow lanes, Renaissance houses, the Kraków Gate and the Grodzka Gate lead to Lublin Castle on the neighbouring hill, and the whole route takes a quarter of an hour on foot.
Beyond the Old Town, Lublin is green: the Saxon Garden in the very centre, the university Botanical Garden on the slopes of the Czechówka valley, and Zemborzyce Lake with beaches and forest to the south. In a single day you can shoot both historic lanes and open water.
People book here for a wedding portrait session, a couple photoshoot, a family session or a maternity shoot in a park. Lublin is a big university city, so portrait sessions at graduation time are popular too, and many international students live here.

Old Town and the Kraków Gate (Brama Krakowska)
The Gothic Kraków Gate, topped with a Baroque crown, is the entrance to the Old Town from Krakowskie Przedmieście, the main street. Behind it begin lanes of colourful houses, the square with the Crown Tribunal building and corners where every turn gives a different background. Towards the castle stands the second gate, Brama Grodzka.
- Best time
- Morning, before 10:00, when the lanes are empty and the light is soft. Blue hour with street lamps in the evening.
- Access
- The Kraków Gate is at the end of the Krakowskie Przedmieście pedestrian street. Cobbles and gentle slopes.
- 02
Lublin Castle
The castle’s white neo-Gothic façade stands on a hill right beside the Old Town. Inside are the National Museum and the Gothic Chapel of the Holy Trinity with its Byzantine-Ruthenian frescoes, and next to it a Romanesque keep. Wide steps and the square below let you fit the whole building into one frame.
- Best time
- Golden hour, when the pale façade takes on warm colour. Lit up after dark.
- Access
- A few minutes on foot from the Grodzka Gate, by steps or a gentle slope. Interiors during museum hours.
- 03
Plac po Farze
A square on the site of the former parish church, whose foundations are marked out in the paving. From its terrace you look across to Lublin Castle and the district below it, with the Old Town houses behind you. It is the finest viewpoint in the centre and a lovely spot for a sunset proposal.
- Best time
- Sunset and blue hour, when the castle lights come on.
- Access
- On the edge of the Old Town, a few minutes from the square. Level terrace, a few steps.
- 04
Saxon Garden (Ogród Saski)
Lublin’s oldest public park, with avenues of tall trees, a fountain and lawns, right on the main street. The natural choice for a family session with children in the centre: shade on hot days, pushchair-friendly paths and plenty of greenery.
- Best time
- Afternoon from spring to autumn; October for coloured leaves.
- Access
- On Krakowskie Przedmieście and Aleje Racławickie, 10–15 minutes on foot from the Kraków Gate.
- 05
Centre for the Meeting of Cultures (CSK)
A modern building of concrete and glass on Plac Teatralny, with a publicly accessible green roof and views over the centre. Clean lines and open space suit personal branding and urban portraits.
- Best time
- Golden hour on the roof; any time on an overcast day.
- Access
- Next to the Saxon Garden, a few minutes from Krakowskie Przedmieście. Check the roof’s opening hours with the operator.
- 06
Zemborzyce Lake (Zalew Zemborzycki)
A large reservoir on the Bystrzyca river at the southern edge of the city, with beaches, jetties, a sailing marina and forest nearby. Open water and reeds give calm, natural images, a world away from the Old Town houses. Good for a maternity session or a relaxed couple shoot.
- Best time
- Golden hour and sunset over the water, May to September.
- Access
- About 20–30 minutes by bus or car from the centre. Beach and forest paths.
- 07
UMCS Botanical Garden
The university garden on the slopes of the Czechówka valley, with plant collections, ponds, paths and a historic manor house. Trees and shrubs flower in spring and the beds in summer, so it is the place for a floral backdrop. The garden is ticketed and open seasonally; check the rules for sessions and any fee with the garden.
- Best time
- May and June for blossom; afternoon for soft light under the trees.
- Access
- In the Sławinek district, about 15–20 minutes by bus from the centre. Sloping paths.

Seasons
May to September brings café gardens, festivals and the greenest parks. Big city events such as Noc Kultury (Night of Culture) and the Carnaval Sztukmistrzów street-theatre festival fill the lanes with people and stages, so check the calendar before you choose a date. September and October mean golden leaves in the Saxon Garden and warm light on the houses. In winter the Old Town is quiet and the castle is beautifully lit after dark.
Time of day
Morning is best for the Old Town lanes and the Kraków Gate. Keep sunset for Plac po Farze and the castle view, or for Zemborzyce Lake. In midsummer the sun sets around 20:45; in December before 15:30. An early or evening slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.
Weather
Lublin has a more continental climate than western Poland: warm, sunny summers and frosty, often snowy winters. In hot weather shoot early and late, and spend midday in the shade of the Saxon Garden. Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms. If it rains, the gateways and passages of the Old Town give shelter, and wet cobbles reflect the lamps beautifully.
Getting there
Trains run to Lublin from Warsaw, and the S17 expressway links the two cities by road. Lublin station is south of the centre, a few stops by trolleybus or bus from the Old Town. Lublin Airport is in Świdnik, just outside the city. In the centre the session is done on foot; photographers usually meet you at the Kraków Gate.
Good to know
A private session in the Old Town streets, outside the castle and in the Saxon Garden needs no permit. The castle interiors, the UMCS Botanical Garden and the CSK roof have their own rules and hours: ask the operator about tickets, fees and whether a session is allowed. Before flying a drone, check the zones on the Polish air navigation agency’s (PAŻP) map. Starting prices are on our pricing page, and our family photography guide for Poland covers sessions with children.
- Start in the Old Town in the morning and finish on Plac po Farze at sunset.
- Wear flat shoes: the Old Town cobbles are uneven and there are steps up to the castle.
- The colourful houses suit muted outfits; strong patterns clash with them.
- Check the festival calendar before choosing a date in June, July or August.
- Bring insect repellent to Zemborzyce Lake, especially on summer evenings.
- If you want flowers in the frame, plan the Botanical Garden for May or June.
