A first birthday is the last moment of crawling or wobbly first steps, and the face changes from month to month. In Poland it is called roczek and is often celebrated with grandparents. A popular format is the smash cake session: the child gets a small cake of their own and is free to do whatever they like with it.
Older children photograph best when they are busy: blowing out candles, unwrapping presents, running around with friends, so party coverage often works better than a posed session. For an adult’s milestone, an eighteenth, a fortieth or a grandparent’s seventieth, what matters is the guests, the toast and a few calm portraits of the person celebrating.

Where the session happens
A first-birthday session works best at home or in a studio, where the child feels at ease and the cake can be cleaned up. In summer a garden or park also works: in Warsaw, Wrocław, Łódź or Gdańsk a shady patch of lawn is enough. If the party is at a play centre or restaurant, ask the venue whether an outside photographer is allowed; play centres are usually dark with coloured lighting, which the photographer needs to know in advance. Preparation tips
- Schedule a first-birthday session after a nap, not before. A rested toddler lasts an hour.
- A smash cake should be small, pale and free of hard decorations. Avoid strong food colouring, which stains skin and clothes.
- Bring a change of clothes and a towel. A bath will be needed after the cake, so a bathroom nearby helps.
- For party coverage, agree the time of the cake and toast with the photographer. Those are the moments worth waiting for.
- Take the photo of all the guests early in the party, before anyone leaves.
- At an adult’s party, ask for 15 minutes of portraits away from the guests, for example on a terrace before dinner.

Should we book a session or party coverage?
A session gives calm, polished portraits in one place. Party coverage shows the celebration: guests, cake, presents and atmosphere. Many families combine both, and the photographer’s time is priced in the proposal.
Can a photographer cover an adult’s birthday at a restaurant?
Yes, milestone birthdays for adults are part of this service. Ask the restaurant beforehand whether it has any limits on outside photographers. The first hours of the party, with speeches, toast and cake, are usually the ones to book.
What if our toddler gets fussy?
It is normal at one year old and the photographer plans for it. They take breaks, let the child wander or eat, and pick the camera up again when the mood lifts. That is why the best time is after a nap, at the hour your child is usually happiest.
