Wedding Portrait Session

Wedding Portrait Session in Kraków

In Kraków, a plener ślubny — the Polish name for a wedding portrait shoot held apart from the wedding day — means about two hours in your wedding outfits before or after the big day, combining Wawel at first light or the lanes of Kazimierz with turquoise Zakrzówek, Tyniec Abbey above the Vistula or the limestone rocks of the Prądnik Valley; Kadrova finds a local photographer, from PLN 1,500.

How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Kadrova checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

On the wedding day itself portraits usually get 20–30 minutes squeezed between courses. A separate session gives you two unhurried hours, the light you choose, and places nobody could reach on a Saturday afternoon — the cliffs at Zakrzówek, the abbey at Tyniec or the limestone pillars near Ojców. In Poland it is common to do this a few weeks after the wedding.

Kraków lets one session cover both city and nature: an empty Market Square at sunrise, then a short drive to water or woods. A local photographer knows the hour when each spot is deserted and where to park so the dress does not cross a kilometre of cobbles. Couples who married abroad often fly in for exactly this.

The Kraków photographers Kadrova suggests have sent us entire sessions, not just a handful of favourites, and know where to park under Wawel before 5 am. Share your date and ideas, and a real person answers with a named photographer, a route and a quote. More on the service: wedding portrait session; more on the city: our Kraków guide.

Where the session happens

  1. 01

    Wawel and the Vistula boulevards

The castle walls above the river bend look best from Bulwar Czerwieński or the Dębniki bank opposite. At dawn only joggers pass, and the eastern sun lights the river side of the castle. A session on the hill itself needs arrangements with the Wawel Royal Castle.

Best time: Sunrise to about 8 am, or evening golden hour.

  2. 02

Main Market Square and the Planty at dawn

An empty square, the Cloth Hall and the towers of St Mary’s in pink light — a frame that exists only before 8 am, before the carriages roll in. It is a good opening for a session that then moves on to greenery or water before the sun climbs.

Best time: Sunrise to about 8 am.

  3. 03

    Kazimierz

Courtyards off Józefa Street, old shop signs and the cobbles of Szeroka give pictures with an old-film feel. Kazimierz shines on a cloudy day or just after rain, when the stones gleam and a long dress on wet cobbles looks dramatic.

Best time: Morning or an overcast afternoon.

  4. 04

    Zakrzówek

A flooded quarry with azure water and pale limestone walls, now a park with a swimming area. In photos it looks like the Mediterranean, yet it is a few minutes’ drive from the centre. On hot days it fills with swimmers, so go in the evening or in September.

Best time: Evenings, May to September.

  5. 05

    Tyniec Abbey

A Benedictine monastery on a rock above the Vistula, about 12 km from the Market Square, with meadows below and a riverside path. At sunset the low light behind the valley rims the walls and the grass. Photography on the abbey grounds must be agreed with the monks.

    Best time: Afternoon and sunset.

  6. 06

    Prądnik Valley and Ojców

Ojców National Park, about 30 km from Kraków: Hercules’ Club rock, Pieskowa Skała castle and a narrow valley of limestone pillars. May is lush green, October golden beech. The park has its own rules for sessions, so check terms with its office.

Best time: May–June and October, in the afternoon.

Typically included

  • A conversation about places, time of day and the kind of pictures you like
  • A route with timings, parking and a spot to change shoes
  • About two hours of photography in one or two places in and around Kraków
  • Gentle direction with posing so the photos look natural
  • A plan B for rain or crowds, such as Kazimierz or the Old Town arcades
  • A web gallery of your chosen, retouched frames; delivery date in the proposal

Preparation

  • Wear comfortable shoes between spots and change at each one; the Kazimierz cobbles and the Tyniec paths are uneven.
  • If the dress has a long train, bring a helper or a clip to lift it between frames.
  • For sunrise, book hair and make-up early and bring a warm layer; at 5 am it is cool even in June.
  • For Zakrzówek and the Prądnik Valley, pack flat shoes and insect repellent.
  • Check session rules where they apply: Wawel, Tyniec and Ojców National Park.

Time of day

Dawn is the only time the Market Square and Wawel are empty: sunrise in Kraków is around 4.30 am in June and 6.15 am in September. In the evening, Zakrzówek and Tyniec come into their own as the sun drops over water and valley; in June it sets around 8.45 pm.

Weather

Most Kraków sessions happen between May and October. July can be muggy with afternoon storms, and autumn mornings on the Vistula often start with mist that gives a soft, milky light. When it rains, the Kazimierz courtyards and Old Town arcades take over, and the date can move on the terms in your proposal.

Getting there

The Market Square, the Planty, Wawel and Kazimierz are linked by short walks. Zakrzówek is a few minutes’ drive from the centre, Tyniec about 20–25 minutes and Ojców about 40. Your photographer plans the route to park close by, and travel outside Kraków is included in the proposal. If you want the mountains too, consider a separate wedding portrait session in Zakopane.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a wedding portrait session in Kraków?

Expect from PLN 1,500 for roughly two hours in Kraków and around 60 finished images. Leaving the city, sunrise, a high-season weekend, film or an album cost more, and each appears on its own line in the proposal.

When is the best time for a wedding portrait session in Kraków?

Most sessions run from May to October, with the best light at sunrise and before sunset. September and October bring warm colours and fewer tourists than July and August.

Do we need permission for Wawel or Ojców?

Session rules on Wawel Hill are set by the Wawel Royal Castle, and in Ojców National Park by the park office, so check with them. The boulevards below Wawel are public and give a similar view.

Do couples do this before or after the wedding?

Usually after, within a few weeks, once the excitement settles and the outfits are still in good shape. Some couples do it before, so they have more time for guests on the day.

We married abroad. Can we still have a session in Kraków?

Yes. Many couples bring their wedding clothes on a trip to Kraków just for the portraits. Tell us your travel dates and we will propose the best hour for each spot during your stay.

Can the same photographer cover our wedding day too?

Yes, many couples book the day and the session with one photographer. See wedding photography in Kraków or wedding photography in Poland; for the seaside, there is the Sopot session.
