Katowice has no medieval old town, and for a photoshoot that is a strength. You get contemporary architecture in the Culture Zone on the site of a former coal mine, brick miners’ estates more than a century old and some of the largest city parks in Poland, all within a tram ride.

The city works especially well for personal branding: geometric façades, glass and concrete give a modern, clean background. Nikiszowiec has a warm, local character that suits a couple photoshoot or an engagement session.

Many people choose Katowice for a wedding portrait session after a Silesian wedding, or a family session in Silesian Park or Three Ponds Valley. Kraków is close, so it is easy to see two very different cities on one trip.

The Spodek and the green roof of the International Congress Centre

The Spodek, a flying-saucer-shaped arena opened in 1971, is the symbol of the city. Right next to it, the International Congress Centre has a grass-covered roof you can walk up like a gentle hillside, looking out over the Spodek and the centre. Strong lines and greenery in one frame are something you will not find elsewhere in Poland.

    Best time
Golden hour, then blue hour when the Spodek is lit. Busy on days of big events.
    Access
About 10–15 minutes on foot from Katowice station, or a few tram stops to the roundabout by the Spodek.
  2. 02

NOSPR and the Silesian Museum in the Culture Zone

The home of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) has a brick façade with a rhythm of vertical recesses that makes an almost graphic portrait backdrop. A few minutes away, the Silesian Museum occupies the former Katowice coal mine: glass boxes above ground, galleries below and a preserved mine shaft tower with a viewing terrace. Perfect for images with an industrial accent.

    Best time
Afternoon and early evening, when low sun brings out the brick texture. Overcast days work well too.
    Access
On foot within the Culture Zone, a few minutes from the Spodek. Wide plazas, pushchair-friendly.
  3. 03

    Nikiszowiec

A miners’ estate built in the early 20th century for the families of mine workers: brick blocks with red window frames, arched gateways, inner courtyards and the neo-Baroque St Anne’s Church. The whole estate is a Polish Historic Monument. Warm brick and repeating arches give a calm, very photogenic background.

    Best time
Late afternoon, when the sun lights the façades from the west. More visitors at weekends.
    Access
About 20 minutes by bus from the centre. Cobbled streets and people’s homes: respect the privacy of the courtyards.
  4. 04

    Giszowiec

An earlier garden-city estate, designed as a green village of cottages among the trees. Some of the original houses were replaced by blocks of flats, but around Plac Pod Lipami white houses with big roofs and gardens remain. It is a quiet, almost rural backdrop, very different from the city centre.

    Best time
Afternoon from spring to autumn, when the trees are in leaf.
    Access
About 20–25 minutes by bus from the centre. A residential estate: keep to the pavements.
  5. 05

    Silesian Park (Park Śląski)

A huge park on the border of Katowice and Chorzów, with avenues, meadows, ponds and a rose garden (Rozarium) in bloom in season. It also holds the Silesian Stadium, the Silesian Planetarium and the Elka cable car. There is so much space that even at weekends you can find a spot without people in the background.

    Best time
Golden hour; June and July for the rose garden, October for the avenues.
    Access
By tram from central Katowice, about 15–20 minutes. Tarmac paths, pushchair-friendly.
  6. 06

Three Ponds Valley (Dolina Trzech Stawów)

A large park south of the centre with three ponds, grassy clearings and trees along the water. Locals come here to walk and cycle, and photographers come for the soft light reflected off the water. Good for family sessions with small children and for a maternity shoot.

    Best time
Evening before sunset. Busy with walkers on summer weekends.
    Access
About 15–20 minutes on foot or a short bus ride from the centre. Level paths.
  7. 07

    Mariacka Street

A pedestrian street in the centre leading to the neo-Gothic St Mary’s Church, whose tower closes the view. Quiet during the day, it comes alive in the evening with string lights, bars and people. Good for a relaxed urban portrait or to finish the session.

    Best time
Morning for an empty street, blue hour for city lights.
    Access
5 minutes on foot from Katowice station. Level pedestrian street.

Seasons

April to October is when the parks are green, and the rose garden in Silesian Park usually blooms from June. September and October bring golden avenues in Silesian Park and Three Ponds Valley. In winter, focus on architecture: the Culture Zone looks good on an overcast day and after dark. Big events and festivals regularly take over the Culture Zone and Three Ponds Valley, so check the events calendar before choosing a date.

Time of day

Golden hour is for the parks and Nikiszowiec, when the brick takes on warm light. Blue hour belongs to the Culture Zone: the lit Spodek and the museum’s glass boxes. In midsummer the sun sets around 20:45; in December around 15:35. An evening slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.

Weather

Katowice has a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. During the heating season, roughly November to March, the air can be hazy with smog, which flattens contrast and distant views; check the air quality forecast and favour closer frames. In summer, hot days often end in afternoon thunderstorms. If it rains, the overhangs of the Culture Zone buildings give shelter.

Getting there

Katowice station is right in the centre, with frequent trains to Kraków, Wrocław and Warsaw. Katowice Airport at Pyrzowice is north of the city. Trams connect the centre with Chorzów and Silesian Park, and buses run to Nikiszowiec and Giszowiec. Photographers usually meet you by the Spodek or on the square in front of the church in Nikiszowiec.

Good to know

A private session on the Culture Zone plazas, in the parks and in the streets needs no permit. The interiors of NOSPR, the Silesian Museum and the Spodek, and the terrace on the mine tower, have their own rules: ask the operator about tickets, fees and whether a session is allowed. People live in Nikiszowiec, so do not walk into private courtyards without asking. Before flying a drone, check the zones on the Polish air navigation agency’s (PAŻP) map. Starting prices are on our pricing page.

  • Combine the Culture Zone and Nikiszowiec: two completely different moods in one session, a short ride apart.
  • For Nikiszowiec, choose colours that are not brick-red: navy, bottle green, beige.
  • In winter, check the air quality forecast; on smoggy days favour closer, intimate frames.
  • Before booking, check that there is no major event at the Spodek or in Three Ponds Valley.
  • For a branding session in the Culture Zone, bring two outfits: one formal, one relaxed.
  • In Silesian Park, agree on an exact meeting point, such as the rose garden; the park is very large.

The Spodek and the green roof of the Congress Centre, NOSPR and the Silesian Museum in the Culture Zone, Nikiszowiec, Giszowiec, Silesian Park, Three Ponds Valley and Mariacka Street. The Culture Zone and Mariacka are in the centre; the estates and parks are a bus or tram ride away.

Can we do a photoshoot in Nikiszowiec?

Yes, the streets and squares of Nikiszowiec are public and popular for sessions. It is a lived-in estate, though, so private courtyards and stairwells are off-limits without residents’ permission, and the church interior can only be photographed by arrangement with the parish.

Is Katowice good for business portraits?

Yes, it is one of the strongest cities in Poland for business photos. The Culture Zone gives a modern, orderly background, while Mariacka Street and Nikiszowiec add a more relaxed, local feel.

Where is a good place for a family photoshoot in Katowice?

Silesian Park or Three Ponds Valley: plenty of space, level paths and water in the background. Family sessions start from PLN 800; our family photography guide for Poland covers how they work.

Can we combine Katowice and Kraków in one session?

Yes, as a multi-location session from PLN 1,400, though travelling between the cities takes time. More often people pair the Culture Zone with Nikiszowiec and keep Kraków or Wrocław for another day. For couples, see our couple photoshoot guide for Poland.
