Wrocław is a city of islands and bridges. The Oder and its branches split the centre into a dozen islands, so almost every frame can include water, a bridge or a riverside promenade. The Market Square, Ostrów Tumski and Słodowa Island are within a 15-minute walk of each other, and Centennial Hall with the Japanese Garden is a few tram stops away.
The city's signature moment is dusk. On Ostrów Tumski a lamplighter in a cape and top hat lights the gas lamps by hand, one after another, while the brick cathedral towers turn gold and then deep blue. Plan a Wrocław session for the evening, and photograph the Market Square at sunrise, before the café terraces fill it.

Market Square (Rynek) and Salt Square
One of the largest market squares in Poland, with a Gothic Town Hall and an ornate façade, rows of colourful merchant houses and countless little bronze dwarves. In one corner, by St Elizabeth's Church, stand the Hansel and Gretel houses joined by a baroque arch. Next door, Salt Square (Plac Solny) has flower stalls open around the clock, a ready-made floral backdrop.
- Best time
- Sunrise to about 8:00; in summer sunrise is around 4:30. Later, terraces and visitors cover most of the square.
- Access
- 15–20 minutes on foot from Wrocław Główny station or a few stops by tram. Pedestrian zone, cobbles.
- 02
Ostrów Tumski at lamp-lighting
The oldest part of the city: the Cathedral of St John the Baptist, churches, canons' houses and cobbled lanes lit by over a hundred gas lamps. Every evening the lamplighter lights them by hand, giving warm, atmospheric light and a natural reason for photos in motion. The cathedral tower has a viewing terrace over the Oder. In churches, photograph only outside services and with the parish's permission.
- Best time
- Dusk and blue hour, when the lamps come on; early in autumn and winter, after 21:00 in summer.
- Access
- About 15 minutes on foot from the Market Square via Sand Island and the Tumski Bridge. Cobbles, so wear flats.
- 03
Tumski Bridge (Most Tumski)
A green steel bridge from the late 19th century linking Sand Island with Ostrów Tumski, hung with lovers' padlocks. From the bridge and the opposite riverbank you see the towers of the cathedral and the Holy Cross Church reflected in the water. It is the classic spot for engagement photos and proposals.
- Best time
- Early morning or dusk; busy with strollers on warm weekend evenings.
- Access
- On the way from the Market Square to Ostrów Tumski, 15 minutes on foot.
- 04
Centennial Hall and the Pergola
Max Berg's reinforced-concrete hall of 1913, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, wrapped by the semicircular Pergola with its concrete columns and climbing plants around a pond. In season the Multimedia Fountain by the Pergola puts on evening shows. The rhythm of the columns and the modernist lines suit personal branding and minimalist couple sessions.
- Best time
- Late afternoon and golden hour; late spring to autumn, when the vines on the Pergola are green or red.
- Access
- Tram to Hala Stulecia stop, about 15 minutes from the centre. Wide, flat paths.
- 05
Japanese Garden in Szczytnicki Park
A garden laid out in the early 20th century next to Centennial Hall, with a pond, a waterfall, little bridges, stone lanterns and carefully clipped planting. Azaleas and cherries bloom in spring and the maples turn red in autumn. It opens seasonally with paid entry, and photo sessions may have separate rules, so check the current regulations with the operator before booking.
- Best time
- May for blossom, October for the maples; weekday mornings.
- Access
- A few minutes' walk from Centennial Hall. Narrow paths and small steps by the bridges.
- 06
Słodowa Island and the Oder boulevards
A small island in the heart of the city and the students' favourite place for picnics and summer evenings. Grass, willows, a view of the University building and several bridges around it give a relaxed, youthful mood. Sand Island and the Dunikowski boulevard, with its view of Ostrów Tumski, are right next to it.
- Best time
- Late afternoon to sunset; lively on warm weekend evenings.
- Access
- 10 minutes on foot from the Market Square via Kuźnicza Street and the Pomorski Bridge. Grass and an uneven embankment.

Seasons
April and May bring blossom and the Japanese Garden at its spring best. June to August gives long evenings by the Oder, though the lamps on Ostrów Tumski are lit late. September and October bring red vines on the Pergola, coloured maples and an earlier dusk, a lovely time for an engagement photoshoot. December brings one of Poland's larger Christmas markets to the square, and short but atmospheric sessions among the lights.
Time of day
Sunrise is the time for an empty Market Square; in June that is around 4:30. Dusk belongs to Ostrów Tumski, when the lamps are lit. The sun sets around 21:00 in June and 15:45 in December, so in winter an evening session can end before dinner. At midday, find shade under the Pergola or in gateways. A sunrise slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.
Weather
Wrocław is one of the warmest large cities in Poland, with a long spring and a mild autumn. Summer can bring heatwaves and afternoon thunderstorms, so move full-sun sessions to the evening. Autumn mornings often bring mist over the Oder, which softens the bridges beautifully. In the rain, the Town Hall arcades, gateways and cloisters keep you dry, and the wet cobbles of Ostrów Tumski under lit lamps look wonderful.
Getting there
Wrocław Główny is a large railway station about 15–20 minutes' walk from the Market Square; a city bus links the airport with the centre. A dense tram network gets you to Centennial Hall quickly. The Market Square, Ostrów Tumski and Słodowa Island are connected on foot, so a session there is a walk. Parking in the centre is paid and scarce; photographers usually meet you by the Town Hall or at the Tumski Bridge.
Good to know
A private session in public streets, squares and riverbanks does not normally need permission. The Japanese Garden, the Centennial Hall grounds and the churches on Ostrów Tumski have their own rules, tickets and opening hours, so check them with the operator, especially before a wedding session. Drone flights over the centre are restricted; check the rules well ahead. Prices start at PLN 500 for 30 minutes and PLN 750 for a couple session; proposals from PLN 950 and wedding portrait sessions from PLN 1,500. See pricing.
- Time the session to finish on Ostrów Tumski just as the lamps are lit.
- Photograph the Market Square at sunrise; after 9:00 terraces and tour groups take over.
- Check the Japanese Garden's season and rules before planning around it.
- Look out for the dwarves: one in the frame is a nice local touch.
- In summer, shoot in the evening; full sun in a heatwave is tiring and harsh.
- Keep your voice down near the churches and canons' houses on Ostrów Tumski.
