Kraków’s advantage is that a beautiful backdrop is a few minutes from almost every church in the centre. It has its limits too: most of the Old Town is closed to cars, the Market Square is packed with visitors on a Saturday afternoon, and receptions are often held outside the city, towards Wieliczka, Niepołomice or Ojców.
Plenty of couples who marry here fly in, with guests landing at Kraków Airport (Balice) from half of Europe. We pick photographers who have shown us complete wedding days in Old Town, Kazimierz and Podgórze churches and at country venues around Wieliczka and Niepołomice, and English-speaking ones can be requested. Send your date and we write back personally with a named photographer, the hours and the fee.
Below you will find the Kraków backdrops worth stepping out for, the hour when each one is calm, and what pushes the fee up. The service in general is explained on wedding photography, the city on our Kraków guide, and other cities on wedding photography in Poland.
Where the session happens
- 01
Vistula boulevards below Wawel
The Bulwar Czerwieński at the foot of Wawel Hill puts the castle and its walls above the river in one frame, without the crowds on the hill itself. It is the quickest route to a classic Kraków portrait from churches in the Old Town or Kazimierz.
Best time: Golden hour before sunset, or early morning.
- 02
Main Market Square and the Planty
The Cloth Hall, St Mary’s Basilica and the merchant houses are empty only in the early morning; after 10 am the horse carriages and tour groups arrive. The Planty, the ring of park around the Old Town, gives shade and quieter frames at any hour.
Best time: Sunrise to about 8 am.
- 03
Kazimierz
Szeroka Street, cobbled lanes, courtyards and old shop signs make intimate, slightly cinematic portraits. It works well on cloudy days and after rain, when the cobbles shine.
Best time: Morning or an overcast afternoon.
- 04
Zakrzówek
A former limestone quarry with turquoise water and white cliffs, now a park with a bathing area, a short drive from the centre. Nobody will guess it is in a city; on hot days it is busy, so evenings work better.
Best time: Evenings, May to September.
- 05
Tyniec Benedictine Abbey
An abbey on a limestone hill above the Vistula, about 12 km from the centre, with meadows and riverbank below. A popular portrait-session spot; check the rules for photography on the abbey grounds with the Benedictines.
Best time: Afternoon and sunset over the river.
- 06
Krakus Mound
A grassy prehistoric mound in Podgórze with a view over the whole city, from Wawel to Nowa Huta. Locals come for the sunset, but there is room for everyone.
Best time: Sunset, especially in spring and autumn.
Typically included
- A call or meeting beforehand to agree times, addresses and the route across the city
- Getting-ready photos, the parents’ blessing and leaving home
- The full ceremony, in church, at the register office or at an outdoor civil ceremony
- Family and guest groups straight after the ceremony, from a list you prepare
- A short portrait walk on the way to the venue or at sunset, if the reception schedule allows
- First dance, toasts, cake and the oczepiny, plus the poprawiny if you want them
- A curated, edited set in a downloadable online gallery, with the delivery date in your proposal
Preparation
- Send your photographer every address with a time — home, church, venue — and add a buffer for traffic on Aleje Trzech Wieszczów and the ring road.
- If the wedding car needs to reach a church in the Old Town, check the rules for the restricted traffic zone.
- If you want Wawel in warm light, ask the venue for a 20-minute break about an hour before sunset.
- Check the parish’s rules for photography during the ceremony.
- For portraits on Wawel Hill or at Tyniec, ask the site managers about session rules in advance.
Time of day
Warm light along the Vistula begins roughly an hour before sunset — about 7.45 pm in June and 6 pm in September — and that is the moment to slip out to the boulevards. For a separate session, the Main Market Square at 6 am is a completely different, empty place.
Weather
Kraków sits in the Vistula basin, so autumn and winter mornings are often foggy or smoggy, and summer can be humid with afternoon storms. Plan B is the Cloth Hall arcades, Kazimierz courtyards and the venue itself.
Getting there
The Old Town and Kazimierz are best covered on foot from the Planty and the river. Zakrzówek, Krakus Mound and Tyniec need a short drive. Saturday afternoon traffic on the ring roads slows the drive to an out-of-town venue, so leave slack in the timeline.
Photographer availability
We confirm availability for your date personally — send a request and we will check which reviewed photographers are free for this place and session.
Check availabilityFrequently asked questions
How much does a wedding photographer in Kraków cost?
Full wedding-day packages in Kraków start from PLN 8,000 and include about 10 hours and roughly 400 photos. The final figure depends on the day of the week, how far the venue is from the centre, a second photographer and extras such as an album or film, all listed line by line in your proposal.
Where are the best spots for wedding portraits in Kraków?
The boulevards below Wawel, Kazimierz, Zakrzówek, Tyniec and Krakus Mound are the usual choices. Each has a different hour when it is quiet, which your photographer plans around your timeline.
Do we need permission to take photos on Wawel Hill?
The rules for professional sessions on Wawel Hill are set by the Wawel Royal Castle, so check them there. The boulevards below the castle are public and give a very similar view.
Can we combine a Kraków wedding with a session in the Tatras?
Yes, many couples book a wedding portrait session in Zakopane, about two hours’ drive from Kraków. It is planned on a separate day and starts from PLN 1,500.
We are getting married abroad but celebrating in Kraków. Can you help?
Yes. A photographer can cover a blessing, a civil ceremony or simply the reception and a portrait session, so the package fits the day you have. Describe the plan in your request and the proposal will reflect it.
Do you also cover weddings in other Polish cities?
Yes. See wedding photography in Warsaw and wedding photography in Gdańsk, or send a request for any other city.
