Toruń has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Poland, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The brick Old Town Hall, the merchant houses on Szeroka Street, the gates in the river walls and the ruins of the Teutonic castle are so close together that a 60-minute session can cover three or four quite different backgrounds.

Red brick gives a warm colour that flatters skin and light outfits, and the river opens the frame to the sky. In the evening, the Old Town lit up along the Vistula looks like a postcard, which is why many couples book sunset and blue hour here.

People come for a wedding portrait session, an engagement shoot or a couple photoshoot. Toruń is also a favourite for a proposal: it features in our guide to proposal places in Poland. Nicolaus Copernicus was born here, and the town is known for its gingerbread.

Old Town Market Square and the Old Town Hall

The Gothic town hall with its tower fills the middle of the square (Rynek Staromiejski), and in front of it stands the statue of Copernicus. Around it are houses from several centuries and café gardens. This is the heart of the Old Town and the city’s best-known frame.

    Best time
Early morning, before 9:00, when the square is empty. Busy with tour groups through summer days.
    Access
About 10 minutes on foot from the tram stop at Plac Rapackiego. Cobbles, level ground.
  2. 02

Szeroka and Żeglarska streets, and the Cathedral of St John

Szeroka links the Old Town and New Town squares and is the main pedestrian street. Żeglarska runs from the square down towards the river past the Gothic Cathedral of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist, whose brick mass fills the frame from ground to sky. The narrow streets give soft, even light for much of the day.

    Best time
Morning or late afternoon, when the streets are in shade and quieter.
    Access
A few minutes from the square. Cobbles; flat shoes help.
  3. 03

The Leaning Tower and the river gates

A medieval tower in the town walls that tilts visibly off vertical (Krzywa Wieża) is one of the most photographed places in Toruń. Along the walls on the river side stand the Monastery Gate, the Sailors’ Gate and the Bridge Gate, which make natural frames for portraits. The tower invites playful perspective shots.

    Best time
Early morning, or after sunset when the walls are lit.
    Access
About 5 minutes from the square towards the Vistula, on Pod Krzywą Wieżą street. Cobbles and a few steps at the gates.
  4. 04

    Teutonic castle ruins

The remains of the Teutonic Order’s castle, with its distinctive gdanisko latrine tower, lie between the Old and New Towns close to the river. Thick brick walls, arches and moats give a raw, textured background, very different from the coloured façades. The site is ticketed; check the rules for sessions and any fee with the operator.

    Best time
Afternoon, when low sun brings out the brick texture. Open during museum hours.
    Access
About 5–10 minutes on foot from the square, from Przedzamcze street. Uneven ground and steps.
  5. 05

    Philadelphia Boulevard (Bulwar Filadelfijski)

The boulevard runs along the Vistula at the foot of the town walls. Gates and brick towers are on one side, the wide river and open sky on the other, and at sunset the colour spreads across the water. It is the place for an unhurried walk with your photographer and natural couple shots.

    Best time
Sunset and blue hour. Busy with strollers on warm evenings.
    Access
Down the steps or through the gates from the market square, 5 minutes. Wide, level path.
  6. 06

Old Town skyline from the left bank

From across the river you see the whole silhouette of the Old Town: walls, cathedral, town hall and church towers above the water. This is the classic Toruń panorama, at its best after dark when the monuments are lit. You stand in the foreground with the glowing city behind you.

    Best time
Golden hour, then blue hour with the Old Town lit.
    Access
On foot across the Józef Piłsudski road bridge, about 15–20 minutes from the square. The bank can be grassy and uneven.
  7. 07

Old Town moat, Collegium Maius and Theatre Square

A green belt along the former moat (Fosa Staromiejska) separates the Old Town from the university quarter. Here stands the large Collegium Maius building of Nicolaus Copernicus University and, on Plac Teatralny, the ornate early 20th-century theatre. Trees, lawns and grand façades suit a family session with children.

    Best time
Late afternoon in spring and autumn, when the trees have colour.
    Access
A few minutes from the square towards Plac Rapackiego. Park paths, pushchair-friendly.

Seasons

May to September is when the Old Town is most alive, with café gardens and flowers, but also busiest, especially at weekends. September and October bring warm light on the brick and morning mist over the Vistula. In December the Old Town has Christmas lights and a market. In late summer the Bella Skyway light festival usually transforms the evening views but draws crowds; check the dates in the city’s events calendar.

Time of day

Morning is best for the market square, Szeroka Street and the Leaning Tower, before the tour groups arrive. Keep sunset for the boulevard and the left-bank skyline: open sky over the river and lit walls. In midsummer the sun sets around 21:00; in December before 15:45. An early or evening slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.

Weather

Toruń has a more continental climate than the coast: warm, sometimes hot summers and frosty winters. In a heatwave, shoot early or late, as the brick walls hold the heat. In autumn, morning mist on the Vistula gives soft, atmospheric images. If it rains, the gates and passages between buildings give shelter, and wet cobbles reflect the street lamps beautifully.

Getting there

Trains run to Toruń from Warsaw, Poznań and Gdańsk, and the A1 motorway passes close by. Toruń Główny station is on the left bank of the Vistula, about 20–25 minutes’ walk from the Old Town or a few stops by bus. Trams run across the city. The Old Town is largely pedestrian, so sessions are done on foot; photographers usually meet you at the Copernicus statue or the Leaning Tower.

Good to know

A private session in the streets, on the square and on the boulevard needs no permit. The castle ruins, the town hall tower and church interiors have their own rules and opening hours: ask the operator about tickets, fees and whether a session is allowed before you book. Churches are not photographed during services. Drone flights over the Old Town need checking against the zones on the Polish air navigation agency’s (PAŻP) map and current rules. Starting prices are on our pricing page.

  • Plan the square and the Leaning Tower for the morning and the boulevard and skyline for the evening; two short visits beat one long one.
  • Wear flat shoes: the whole Old Town is cobbled, with steps at the gates.
  • Light and pastel colours stand out against red brick; brick-red outfits merge with the walls.
  • Buy Toruń gingerbread after the session; it makes a good prop and a local touch.
  • Check the events calendar before choosing a date in August or on a long weekend.
  • Bring a warm layer for the left-bank skyline; it gets cool by the river after dark.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the best photo spots in Toruń?

The Old Town Market Square and town hall, Szeroka and Żeglarska streets, the Leaning Tower and river gates, the Teutonic castle ruins, Philadelphia Boulevard and the Old Town skyline from the left bank of the Vistula. They are all within walking distance, so a 60-minute session can include several.

How much does a photographer in Toruń cost?

Sessions start from PLN 500 for 30 minutes, PLN 750 for a couple and PLN 1,500 for a wedding portrait session. The final price depends on the photographer, date, time of day and duration, and is stated in your proposal.

When is Toruń’s Old Town quiet enough for photos?

In the morning, ideally before 9:00, especially from May to September. In the afternoon and at weekends the square and Szeroka Street fill with visitors, and in the evening the crowd moves to the boulevard.

Can we do a photoshoot in the Teutonic castle ruins?

The ruins are run as a ticketed museum site, so the operator sets the rules for sessions. Ask about opening hours, tickets and any session fee before your date.

Is Toruń a good place for a proposal?

Yes. The boulevard at sunset and the lit skyline from the left bank are romantic and less crowded than the market square. Our proposal photography guide for Poland explains how the hidden-photographer plan works, from PLN 950.

Can we combine Toruń with another city?

Yes, as a multi-location session from PLN 1,400, though most sessions combine different spots within Toruń itself. On a longer trip, Toruń sits between Gdańsk, Poznań and Warsaw.
