Quick answers
- How much does it cost?
- Photoshoot in Zakopane starts from PLN 1,050. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
- When is the best time?
- Dawn and early morning suit the valleys and Morskie Oko: few people and calm air.
- Which experiences are available here?
- Wedding Portrait Session, Proposal Photography, Couple Photoshoot, Engagement Photoshoot, Family Photoshoot, and Wedding Photography
- Getting there
- From Kraków it takes about two hours by bus, or longer by train; on Fridays and Saturdays the main road (the 'zakopianka') is often jammed.
- Where does it take place?
- Popular places include Gubałówka; Krupówki; Kościeliska Valley (Dolina Kościeliska); Kasprowy Wierch. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
- How does booking work?
- Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Kadrova checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.
Zakopane sits at about 840 metres at the foot of the Tatras, Poland's only alpine range, and the mountains are the main backdrop. From Gubałówka you see the whole skyline from Giewont to the High Tatras; in the Kościeliska Valley you have a stream and limestone cliffs; from Kasprowy Wierch the ridge along the Slovak border. Add wooden churches, villas in the local Zakopane style and the Wielka Krokiew ski jump.
A mountain session takes more planning than a city one: walks are longer, the weather turns within an hour, and much of the area lies in Tatra National Park, which has its own rules. That is why every session in Zakopane starts from PLN 1,050 and usually lasts about 90 minutes, and your photographer agrees a plan B with you for cloud or wind.
Couples come here for a wedding portrait session in Zakopane, a proposal or an engagement shoot, and families come on holiday. Zakopane combines easily with Kraków, about two hours away; for more surprise ideas see where to propose in Poland.
Photo spots — Zakopane
- 01
Gubałówka
The ridge above the town, at over 1,100 metres, faces the entire Tatra range across the valley. It is the easiest mountain panorama in Zakopane: a short ride up, then meadows and a path towards Butorowy Wierch. Souvenir stalls crowd the top station, so walk a few hundred metres along the ridge for a clean frame.
- Best time
- Late afternoon and sunset, when side light picks out the ridges. In winter also a sunny late morning.
- Access
- Funicular from the end of Krupówki street, a ride of a few minutes. Or walk up on a trail, about an hour uphill.
- 02
Krupówki
Zakopane's main pedestrian street, lined with timber and stone houses and highland-style signs, with Giewont visible from its lower end. By day it is packed; at dawn it is empty and gives a highland town feel to open the session.
- Best time
- Early morning, before 8:00. In winter, blue hour with the Christmas lights.
- Access
- Town centre, a few minutes on foot from the bus and train stations.
- 03
Kościeliska Valley (Dolina Kościeliska)
One of the gentlest Tatra valleys: a wide track along the Kościeliski stream, limestone crags, glades and mixed forest. The lower part is enough for a short session; further on are the Hala Ornak mountain hut and the small Smreczyński lake. In spring, crocuses flower on the Tatra meadows, which is when the valley is busiest.
- Best time
- Morning, before the groups arrive. October for autumn colour.
- Access
- Entrance at Kiry, about 20 minutes by minibus from Zakopane. Paid park entry; easy gradient, about 1.5–2 hours' walk to the Hala Ornak hut.
- 04
Kasprowy Wierch
A 1,987-metre summit on the Polish–Slovak border, reached by cable car from Kuźnice. From the ridge you look over the High and Western Tatras on both sides of the border: the most alpine frame you can get without a long hike. It is colder and windier at the top, often by more than ten degrees.
- Best time
- Morning in settled weather, before cloud builds over the ridge. In winter on a clear day.
- Access
- Cable car from Kuźnice with a change at Myślenickie Turnie. Buy tickets online in advance; the cable car can stop in strong wind.
- 05
Morskie Oko
The largest lake in the Tatras, framed by the walls of the Mięguszowieckie peaks with Rysy above. It is the icon of the range and the busiest place in the park; in summer crowds walk the road all day. A session here takes a whole morning, but water with sheer rock walls behind is hard to replace.
- Best time
- Very early morning, ideally on a weekday outside school holidays. September and October.
- Access
- From the Palenica Białczańska car park about 9 km on a tarmac road, 2–2.5 hours' walk each way. Horse-drawn carts cover part of the route. Car park places must be booked in advance; check the current rules with the national park.
- 06
Wielka Krokiew ski jump
The ski jump on the edge of town, which hosts World Cup competitions in January. From below you get a bold, graphic frame of the in-run above the forest; from the top, a view over Zakopane and Gubałówka. A spot with character, especially for winter-sport fans.
- Best time
- Afternoon, avoiding competition and training days.
- Access
- About 20 minutes' walk from the centre. Check whether the lift and viewing platform are open on the day.
- 07
The Old Church, Pęksowy Brzyzek and the Jaszczurówka chapel
The wooden Old Church on ul. Kościeliska and the cemetery beside it, Pęksowy Brzyzek, are the oldest part of Zakopane, with carved graves of artists and Tatra guides. The Jaszczurówka chapel, designed by Stanisław Witkiewicz in the Zakopane style, stands in the forest on the road towards Morskie Oko. Both give warm timber, shingle roofs and detail that suits wedding and family sessions.
- Best time
- Afternoon, outside service times. Autumn, or winter with snow on the roofs.
- Access
- The Old Church is a few minutes' walk from Krupówki; Jaszczurówka is a short bus or car ride. The cemetery is a place of remembrance, so keep photography discreet.

Seasons
September and October are the best months for a Tatra session: steadier weather, fewer people, golden larches and beeches. Winter (December–March) brings snow to town and valleys, but Christmas, New Year and the Polish winter school holidays fill Zakopane. April has crocuses on the meadows and snow higher up. July and August mean long days and the biggest crowds; set off at dawn for popular trails. November is often grey and misty, and the lifts often close for maintenance.
Time of day
Dawn and early morning suit the valleys and Morskie Oko: few people and calm air. Late afternoon and sunset belong to Gubałówka, where the light falls across the whole range. In deep valleys the sun disappears behind the ridges earlier than in town. In June the sun rises around 4:30 and sets just before 21:00.
Weather
Mountain weather in the Tatras changes fast: a clear morning can end in a thunderstorm, especially in July and August, so higher sessions are planned for the morning. The halny, a warm, gusty southerly wind (a foehn) most common in autumn and spring, can stop the Kasprowy cable car and bring down trees; on those days you stay in town. Kasprowy Wierch is usually more than ten degrees colder than Krupówki. Your photographer watches the forecast and mountain rescue (TOPR) warnings and, in bad weather, offers another date or a plan B in town.
Getting there
From Kraków it takes about two hours by bus, or longer by train; on Fridays and Saturdays the main road (the 'zakopianka') is often jammed. In Zakopane you can walk to Krupówki, the Old Church and the Gubałówka funicular, while minibuses and buses run to Kuźnice, Kiry and Palenica Białczańska. Parking at the valley entrances is scarce, and for Morskie Oko it must be booked. For a multi-spot session your photographer's car or a taxi is easiest.
Good to know
Entry to Tatra National Park (TPN) is paid; tickets are sold at the entrances and online. The park has its own regulations: stay on marked trails, keep off the meadows and leave no props behind. A session with a hired photographer may count as commercial photography, which under TPN rules needs the park's consent; check the current regulations and ask the park office before you book. Drone flights over the park are generally prohibited without permission. See starting prices or ask about your date.
- Plan the session for the morning and keep a spare day in your trip; mountain weather surprises.
- Bring a warm layer and proper shoes even if the town is hot; carry your photo shoes in a backpack.
- Book Kasprowy Wierch cable car tickets in advance, especially at weekends and in summer.
- Check the national park's rules on commercial photography before a session inside TPN.
- A long wedding dress and Tatra trails rarely mix; choose the lower valleys and Gubałówka.
- If the halny is blowing, do not head into the mountains; your photographer will suggest a plan B in town.
- Treat Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery as the place of remembrance it is.

How much does a photoshoot in Zakopane cost?
Every session in Zakopane starts from PLN 1,050 and usually lasts about 90 minutes. A wedding portrait session starts from PLN 1,500. Time of day, number of spots, travel and cable car or park tickets also affect the total, which you see in your proposal.
Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Tatra National Park?
A session with a hired photographer may be treated as commercial photography, which under the park's regulations needs TPN's consent. The rules and fees change, so check the current regulations on the TPN website or ask the park office before the shoot. Either way you need an entry ticket and must stay on marked trails.
Where are the best photo spots in Zakopane?
The favourites are Gubałówka with its Tatra panorama, the Kościeliska Valley, Kasprowy Wierch, Morskie Oko, Krupówki at dawn, the Wielka Krokiew ski jump and the wooden churches, such as the Old Church and the Jaszczurówka chapel. Gubałówka and the town are the easiest to reach. Morskie Oko means several hours of walking there and back.
What happens if the weather is bad or the halny is blowing?
Your photographer watches the forecast and, in a storm, heavy rain or halny wind, suggests moving the session or a plan B in town. The rescheduling terms are set out in your proposal. Keeping one spare day in your itinerary is wise.
Can I get to Zakopane from Kraków for a day session?
Yes. Buses from Kraków take about two hours, so a morning or afternoon session works as a day trip. Weekend traffic on the main road can add time, and a sunrise session is easier if you stay the night.
When is the best time for a wedding portrait session in the Tatras?
September and October are the best: steadier weather, golden colours and fewer tourists. A winter session in the snow is possible too, but the days are short. See our page on the wedding portrait session in Zakopane for details.
Can I have my proposal photographed in Zakopane?
Yes; Gubałówka at sunset, the Kościeliska Valley and Kasprowy Wierch are popular choices. The photographer hides at the agreed spot in advance, and a proposal session in Zakopane starts from PLN 1,050. For more ideas, read where to propose in Poland.
