Poznań photographs as two cities. One is historic: the Old Market Square (Stary Rynek) with its narrow, brightly painted merchants' houses and Renaissance town hall, and Ostrów Tumski, the island where Poland's first cathedral was built. The other is water and trees: Lake Malta, the hilltop Citadel Park and Lake Rusałka, a forest lake you can reach by tram.
That makes it easy to combine an urban and a natural look in one session. The square and the cathedral island are a 15-minute walk apart, and Lake Malta starts just beyond the island. Photographers usually suggest two spots per hour, or three at most, so the light is not spent in transit.
People mostly book here for couple photoshoots, family sessions and wedding portrait sessions. Many are expats working in the city's offices and universities, or visitors combining Poznań with Toruń, Wrocław or a trip from Warsaw.

Old Market Square (Stary Rynek) and the town hall goats
One of the largest market squares in Poland, with a Renaissance town hall in the middle and a row of narrow, colourful merchants' houses beside it. Every day at 12:00 two mechanical goats appear above the town hall clock and butt heads; a crowd gathers below, which is great for a lively city frame and poor for a quiet portrait. The painted façades suit calm, single-colour outfits.
- Best time
- Early morning, before 8:00, when the café terraces are still packed away. Blue hour for the lit town hall.
- Access
- Right in the centre, a few minutes on foot from the trams at Plac Wielkopolski. Cobblestones, so flat shoes help.
- 02
Ostrów Tumski, Jordan Bridge and Śródka
The island between the Warta and Cybina rivers holds the cathedral, the small Gothic Church of the Virgin Mary and a calm the market square never has. A white footbridge, Most Jordana, leads to Śródka, where a well-known 3D mural covers the side of a tenement house. The red brick works beautifully with a white wedding dress and autumn colours.
- Best time
- Late afternoon, when the brick turns warm. Jordan Bridge also at sunrise.
- Access
- About 15–20 minutes' walk from the Old Market Square, or a few tram stops. Flat. Please keep away from the cathedral entrance during services.
- 03
Lake Malta (Jezioro Maltańskie)
A man-made lake east of the cathedral island with an international rowing course and a promenade of several kilometres around it. It gives you a wide sheet of water, jetties, reeds and trees on the northern shore. A natural choice for a relaxed couple session or a family shoot with small children who want to run.
- Best time
- Golden hour before sunset and early mornings, when the promenade belongs to runners.
- Access
- About 15 minutes by tram from the centre, or on foot from Ostrów Tumski through Śródka. Tarmac promenade, pram-friendly.
- 04
Citadel Park (Park Cytadela)
Poznań's largest park, laid out on the site of a 19th-century Prussian fort. You get wide avenues, hills, a rose garden, brick remnants of the fortifications and Magdalena Abakanowicz's installation 'Unrecognised', a crowd of headless cast-iron figures. The park also contains military cemeteries; these are places of remembrance, not a backdrop.
- Best time
- Afternoon and golden hour; spring blossom and autumn leaves are the best seasons.
- Access
- About 15 minutes' walk north of the centre, with a long flight of steps up the hill. The park is large, so plan the route with your photographer.
- 05
Stary Browar and around
A shopping and arts centre in a former brewery, all red brick, steel and glass. Outside, from the small park beside it and from ul. Półwiejska, you get clean, modern city frames that suit personal branding portraits or a business headshot.
- Best time
- Any time, including grey days. After dark for the lit façades.
- Access
- A few minutes from the Old Market Square along the pedestrian ul. Półwiejska. Shooting inside the centre needs the management's consent, so check first.
- 06
Lake Rusałka
A forest lake on the western side of the city, ringed by pines, with wooden jetties and a path along the shore. It is the least urban spot in Poznań: dappled light, water and no buildings in the background. It works well for a maternity session or a quiet couple shoot.
- Best time
- Evening before sunset, especially May to October. Summer weekend afternoons bring swimmers.
- Access
- Tram towards Golęcin, then a few minutes on foot. Forest paths can be muddy after rain.

Seasons
May and June bring fresh green at the Citadel and Malta and long evenings; in June the sun sets around 21:00. September and October give warm tree colours and fewer visitors on the square. Winter days are short (sunset around 15:40 in December), but the Old Market Square has its Christmas market and lights. On 11 November Poznań celebrates St Martin's Day with a parade and croissant stalls on ul. Święty Marcin, so the centre is crowded. Big trade fairs at the city's exhibition grounds fill the hotels quickly.
Time of day
Mornings are the one time the Old Market Square is free of terraces and crowds. Late afternoon and sunset belong to Lake Malta, the Citadel and Rusałka. At midday, look for shade between the tenement houses. A sunrise or weekend slot may cost more; this is stated in your proposal.
Weather
Poznań sits on the flat Greater Poland lowland and is one of the warmer, drier parts of the country. Summers can be hot, so a July or August shoot is best in the evening. In spring and autumn the mornings at Malta and Rusałka are often misty, which gives soft, even light. On rainy days the arcades around the square, the Stary Browar area and wet, shining cobbles still make good pictures.
Getting there
Poznań Główny station has direct trains to Warsaw (around 2.5–3 hours on express services), Wrocław and Berlin, and Ławica airport is a few kilometres from the centre. You can walk between the Old Market Square, Ostrów Tumski and Stary Browar; Lake Malta and Rusałka are a short tram ride. For a multi-spot session a car or taxi is easiest; the centre is a paid parking zone.
Good to know
A private photoshoot in public space (the square, the parks, the lakes) does not usually need permission. Interiors are different: shopping centres, the cathedral and museums have their own rules, so check with the management. Drone flights over the city centre are restricted, more so near Ławica airport; check the current zones on the official drone map. See the pricing page for starting prices and send a free availability request when you have a date.
- If you want the goats in the frame, meet at 11:45 and stand to the side of the crowd.
- Choose a weekday morning for the Old Market Square; in the evenings restaurant terraces cover most of it.
- Combine Ostrów Tumski with Lake Malta: they are a 15-minute walk apart over Jordan Bridge.
- Bring insect repellent and comfortable shoes for the forest paths at Rusałka.
- In the Citadel Park keep away from the military cemeteries and memorials.
- Single, calm colours (beige, navy, white) look best against the painted façades.

Check availability in PoznańFrequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot in Poznań cost?
A short solo session starts from PLN 500 and a couple photoshoot from PLN 750. The price depends on the photographer, the length of the session, the time of day and the number of spots. You see the exact figure in your proposal before you confirm anything.
Where are the best photo spots in Poznań?
The most popular are the Old Market Square, Ostrów Tumski with Jordan Bridge, Lake Malta, Citadel Park, the Stary Browar area and Lake Rusałka. The square and the island give a historic city look; Malta and Rusałka give water and greenery. A one-hour session usually covers two of them.
When do the goats appear on Poznań town hall?
The two mechanical goats come out above the town hall clock every day at 12:00 and butt heads. A crowd gathers below, so it is a good moment for a lively city shot but not for a quiet portrait. For an empty square, book an early morning instead.
Do I need a permit for a photoshoot in Poznań?
A private session in public squares and parks usually needs no permit. Permission may be needed indoors, on private property such as shopping centres, and for drone flights. When in doubt, check the rules with whoever manages the place.
Can I book a photographer in Poznań who speaks English?
Yes, you can ask for an English-speaking photographer in your request. Photographers' languages are shown on their profiles, and we tell you in the proposal who is free on your date. The session itself works the same way in any language.
Is Poznań good for a wedding portrait session?
Yes: Ostrów Tumski with its brick cathedral, the Old Market Square at dawn, the Citadel and Lake Rusałka are all popular for a wedding portrait session on a separate day. It lasts about two hours and starts from PLN 1,500. Our guide to wedding photography in Poland explains how it fits into the wedding.
