Quick answers

How much does it cost?
Photoshoot in Gdańsk starts from PLN 750. The final price depends on the place, duration, date, time of day, travel and any add-ons such as video, and is stated in your proposal before you book.
When is the best time?
Sunrise gives you an empty Long Market and a quiet waterfront; in June the sun rises around 4:00. Evening golden hour is best on the Long Embankment, where the western sun lights Granary Island, and on Brzeźno beach.
Getting there
SKM trains link Gdańsk with Sopot and Gdynia, stopping at Gdańsk Główny, Gdańsk Śródmieście and Gdańsk Oliwa among others.
Where does it take place?
Popular places include Long Market and Long Embankment (Długi Targ, Długie Pobrzeże); The Crane (Żuraw) on the Motława; Mariacka Street; Granary Island and Ołowianka. Your photographer suggests the best spot for your date, the light and the crowds.
How does booking work?
Send a free request with your place, date and plans. Kadrova checks which photographers are available and replies with a proposal stating the photographer, the package and the exact price. Nothing is booked until you accept.

Gdańsk combines two things no other large Polish city offers together: a Hanseatic Main Town of tall, narrow merchant houses, and the open Baltic a short tram ride away. You can photograph the stone terraces of Mariacka Street in the morning and stand barefoot on Brzeźno beach by evening.

The Main Town is compact. The Long Market, the Crane, Mariacka Street and Granary Island are a few minutes' walk apart. In summer the Royal Route is packed, and during St Dominic's Fair, from late July into August, the streets are lined with stalls. That is when it pays to start at sunrise or move part of the session to the beach or Oliwa.

Gdańsk is a popular choice for proposal photography in Gdańsk and for wedding photography in Gdańsk. Couples often combine it with the pier and beach in Sopot or modernist Gdynia. For ideas beyond the coast, see our guide to proposal places in Poland.

  1. 01

Long Market and Long Embankment (Długi Targ, Długie Pobrzeże)

The heart of the Royal Route: Neptune's Fountain, Artus Court, the Main Town Hall and a row of colourful merchant houses ending at the Green Gate. Beyond the gate is the Long Embankment along the Motława, with Granary Island opposite and the houses reflected in the water. It is the most recognisable frame in Gdańsk.

    Best time
Sunrise and the hour after it; very busy after 10:00, especially in summer.
    Access
About 15 minutes on foot from Gdańsk Główny station through the Golden Gate. Pedestrian zone, cobbles and stone slabs.
  2. 02

The Crane (Żuraw) on the Motława

A medieval port crane with a timber structure between brick towers, now part of the National Maritime Museum. It looks best from the opposite bank, from Ołowianka or Granary Island, with its reflection and moored ships. In summer, tourist galleons sail from here and add a harbour feel to the frame.

    Best time
Evening golden hour, when the sun lights the façades from the west; the waterfront is lit after dark.
    Access
On the Long Embankment, 5 minutes from the Green Gate. Footbridges lead to the far bank.
  3. 03

    Mariacka Street

The most photogenic street in Gdańsk: stone front terraces with balustrades, dragon-head gargoyles, amber workshops and the brick bulk of St Mary's Basilica closing the view. It is narrow and shaded, so the light stays soft for most of the day. The terrace steps belong to the houses, so do not block entrances.

    Best time
Early morning before the shops open; on a rainy day the wet stone gives lovely reflections.
    Access
Through St Mary's Gate off the Long Embankment, 3 minutes from the Crane.
  4. 04

    Granary Island and Ołowianka

The island between the Motława and the New Motława, where ruined granaries stand among new buildings. Its quay gives a panorama of the Long Embankment and the Crane, and the museum ship Sołdek is moored at Ołowianka. Far fewer passers-by than on the other bank.

    Best time
Afternoon and sunset, when the Main Town panorama is in light.
    Access
Footbridges from the Long Embankment; the drawbridge opens from time to time to let yachts through.
  5. 05

    Oliwa Park

A historic park beside Oliwa Cathedral, with a French garden, long clipped hornbeam alleys that form green tunnels, ponds and a palm house. It is a calm, elegant setting for family, maternity and wedding sessions. Check the rules for sessions in the park and around the cathedral with the operator.

    Best time
May and June for fresh green, October for colour; late afternoon.
    Access
SKM to Gdańsk Oliwa or a tram, then about 10 minutes on foot. Flat paths.
  6. 06

    Westerplatte

The place where the Second World War began on 1 September 1939, with the Monument to the Defenders of the Coast on its mound and views over the harbour entrance. It is first of all a memorial, so it does not suit a light-hearted shoot; quiet portraits along the harbour channel with passing ships work better. Check current rules with the Museum of the Second World War.

    Best time
Weekday afternoons, avoiding the 1 September anniversary.
    Access
City bus (line 106) or, in summer, a boat from the Long Embankment.
  7. 07

    Brzeźno beach and pier

A wide sandy beach with a wooden pier, calmer than Sopot. A coastal path runs from Brzeźno all the way to Sopot, so you can change backdrop without a car. Sea, dunes and open sky give bright, spacious images, ideal for couples and families with children.

    Best time
Sunset from May to September; empty and moody in the cooler months.
    Access
Tram from the centre to Brzeźno, about 20–25 minutes. Sand, so go barefoot or wear flats.

Seasons

May and June bring long days, blossoming parks and moderate crowds. July and August are beach season and peak tourist time, and St Dominic's Fair fills the Main Town from late July into August. September is often warm while the beaches are quiet, a good time for a couple photoshoot. In winter the Main Town has a Christmas market and lights, and the coast turns stark and beautiful.

Time of day

Sunrise gives you an empty Long Market and a quiet waterfront; in June the sun rises around 4:00. Evening golden hour is best on the Long Embankment, where the western sun lights Granary Island, and on Brzeźno beach. The sun sets around 21:15 in June and 15:20 in December. A sunrise slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.

Weather

The sea shapes Gdańsk's weather: summers are milder than inland, and spring on the bay can be cool and windy. A sea breeze will tug at dresses and hair, so bring a warm layer and a hair tie to the beach. The weather changes quickly; in a shower you can shelter in St Mary's Gate, the Green Gate or under arcades. A misty morning on the Motława gives very atmospheric pictures.

Getting there

SKM trains link Gdańsk with Sopot and Gdynia, stopping at Gdańsk Główny, Gdańsk Śródmieście and Gdańsk Oliwa among others. PKM trains serve Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport. Trams run across the city, including to Brzeźno and Oliwa. The Main Town is explored on foot, and parking in the centre is paid and limited, so photographers usually meet you at the Green Gate or the Golden Gate.

Good to know

A private session in public streets and quays does not normally need permission. Oliwa Park, the cathedral, Westerplatte and churches have their own rules, so check them with the operator before your session, especially for weddings. The port and airport mean drone flights are restricted over parts of the city; check the rules well ahead. Prices start at PLN 500 for 30 minutes and PLN 750 for a couple session; proposals from PLN 950, and Gdańsk plus Sopot in one booking from PLN 1,400. See pricing for details.

  • Shoot the Long Market and Mariacka at sunrise, the waterfront and the beach in the evening.
  • Bring a warm layer to the beach even in June; the sea breeze is cool.
  • During St Dominic's Fair, move the session to Oliwa, Granary Island or the beach.
  • On Mariacka, do not sit on private terrace steps without the residents' permission.
  • Combine Gdańsk with Sopot; the SKM train takes under half an hour.

Where are the best photo spots in Gdańsk?

The Long Market and Long Embankment, the Crane, Mariacka Street, Granary Island, Oliwa Park and the beach and pier at Brzeźno. The first four are a few minutes' walk apart. Your photographer will plan the route around the light and your type of session.

How much does a photographer in Gdańsk cost?

Sessions start at PLN 500 for 30 minutes and PLN 750 for a couple shoot; proposals from PLN 950 and family sessions from PLN 800. The price depends on the photographer, date, time of day and duration. You see the exact figure in your proposal.

When is the Long Market in Gdańsk quietest?

At sunrise and until about 9:00, especially on weekdays. In summer and during St Dominic's Fair the Main Town is crowded from morning to late evening.

Can we combine Gdańsk and Sopot in one session?

Yes, as a multi-location session from PLN 1,400. The SKM train between Gdańsk and Sopot is quick, and the coastal path from Brzeźno leads to Sopot pier. A popular plan is the Main Town in the morning and the beach in the evening.

Is Gdańsk a good place for a proposal?

Yes. Granary Island at sunset, Brzeźno pier and the quieter end of the Long Embankment at dawn all allow a hidden photographer. See proposal photography in Gdańsk; proposal sessions start at PLN 950.

What if it is windy or raining on the coast?
