Gdynia is the youngest of the three Tricity cities, built mostly in the 1920s and 1930s around a new port. Instead of Gothic brick you get white modernist buildings, wide quays, museum ships and beaches a few minutes from the centre. The coast faces east, so this is where the sun rises straight out of the water.
It is also quieter than Sopot and Gdańsk. The seafront promenade and the Orłowo pier fill up on July weekends, but early in the morning and outside the summer holidays you often have the frame to yourself.
People come here for a family session on the beach, a maternity shoot by the sea or a wedding portrait session after a Tricity wedding. The clean modernist façades and the port also suit personal branding portraits.
Photo spots — Gdynia
- 01
Kościuszko Square, the Southern Pier, Dar Pomorza and ORP Błyskawica
A broad pedestrian avenue (Skwer Kościuszki) runs from the city centre straight to the sea. Two museum ships are moored at the quay: the white tall ship Dar Pomorza and the Second World War destroyer ORP Błyskawica. Further on, the Southern Pier ends with the Joseph Conrad monument and an open view of the gulf. The masts and rigging of Dar Pomorza are the city’s signature backdrop.
- Best time
- Early morning, when the sun lights the ship from the sea side. Blue hour for the lit waterfront.
- Access
- About 15 minutes on foot from Gdynia Główna station. Flat and paved, fine with a pushchair.
- 02
Seafront promenade (Bulwar Nadmorski)
The promenade follows the water south from Kościuszko Square, below the slopes of Kamienna Góra, towards Redłowo. The gulf and breakwaters are on one side, greenery on the other, so you can change background without walking far. It suits relaxed walking shots, children and bikes.
- Best time
- Sunrise over the gulf, around 4:15–4:45 in midsummer. Late afternoon for soft light from the city side.
- Access
- From Kościuszko Square or the streets coming down from Kamienna Góra. Wide, level surface.
- 03
Kamienna Góra viewpoint
A hill right above the centre with a viewpoint over the port, Kościuszko Square, the Sea Towers and the whole bay. Pre-war villas line the slopes and footpaths run through the trees. This is the frame that says Gdynia at a glance.
- Best time
- Late afternoon and golden hour, when the sun behind you lights the city and the sea.
- Access
- Stairs and paths from the centre, a few minutes uphill. A small funicular also runs up the hill; check its hours with the operator.
- 04
Modernist city centre: Świętojańska Street
Gdynia’s interwar modernism means rounded corners, balconies shaped like ship decks and pale render. Świętojańska Street and the side streets around it give calm, geometric backgrounds for portraits and business photos, and they work on an overcast day too.
- Best time
- Weekday mornings or Sundays, when traffic is lighter. Soft overcast light suits it well.
- Access
- 5–10 minutes on foot from Gdynia Główna station. Pavements and street traffic.
- 05
Redłowo beach
A wide sandy beach between the end of the promenade and the wooded headland of Kępa Redłowska. It is calmer than the central beaches of Sopot and is closed to the south by the cliff. The natural choice for barefoot family sessions with a blanket and children running in the sand.
- Best time
- Sunrise over the sea, or late afternoon outside the summer bathing season.
- Access
- About 15 minutes on foot from Gdynia Redłowo station, or a walk along the promenade.
- 06
Orłowo pier
A wooden pier reaching into the bay at the foot of the cliff. Sunrise at its end is one of the most photographed frames in the Tricity: the boards lead the eye straight to the sun. At dawn it is often almost empty, which makes it a good place for a proposal with a photographer.
- Best time
- Sunrise, all year. Busy during the day and in the evening in summer.
- Access
- About 10–15 minutes on foot from Gdynia Orłowo station, the last part downhill to the beach.
- 07
Orłowo cliff (Klif Orłowski)
A steep sandy cliff at the edge of the Kępa Redłowska nature reserve, with beech forest on top. You photograph it from the beach, walking north from Orłowo: the shore is wild and at dawn the light falls on the cliff face from the sea. The cliff is eroding, so stay on the beach and marked paths.
- Best time
- Sunrise and the hour after, when the cliff face is lit.
- Access
- A walk along the beach from the Orłowo pier. Sand and stones; sturdy shoes or bare feet.

Seasons
May to September brings the longest days and the warmest sea, but July and August fill the beaches and the promenade, and in early July the Open’er festival brings big crowds to Gdynia. September and October are the best compromise: warm light, empty beaches, less wind than in winter. Winter can be grey and windy, yet the Orłowo pier at dawn and frosty beaches make for quiet, graphic images.
Time of day
The coast faces east, so sunrise is the main hour for the beach, the pier and the cliff. In midsummer the sun rises around 4:15; in December after 8:00. Keep late afternoon for Kamienna Góra and the centre, when the sun lights the city from the west. A sunrise slot may carry a surcharge, stated in your proposal.
Weather
There is nearly always wind on the bay, and an onshore breeze can feel cold even in June. Bring an extra layer and hair pins. The weather turns quickly: morning sea mist often lifts by 9:00, and a passing shower can blow over within a quarter of an hour. If it pours, the deep doorways and arcades of the modernist buildings in the centre give shelter.
Getting there
The SKM commuter train links Gdańsk, Sopot and Gdynia and is the easiest way around. Get off at Gdynia Główna for the centre and Kościuszko Square, Gdynia Redłowo for the beach, and Gdynia Orłowo for the pier and the cliff. Buses and trolleybuses run across the city. Photographers usually meet you at the station or beside Dar Pomorza; parking near the beach is hard in summer. If you are flying in, Gdańsk airport serves the whole Tricity.
Good to know
A private session on the promenade, the beach or in the streets needs no permit. Dar Pomorza and ORP Błyskawica are museum ships: photos from the quay are simple, but ask the museum that runs them about shooting on board, tickets and photography rules. Kępa Redłowska is a nature reserve with its own rules, and there is a naval port nearby, so check the zones on the Polish air navigation agency’s (PAŻP) drone map before planning any drone shots. Starting prices are on our pricing page.
- Plan dawn at the Orłowo pier and the cliff, and late afternoon on Kamienna Góra: two different lights on the same day.
- Bring a warm layer even in summer; the wind off the bay chills you quickly on wet sand.
- Light, plain fabrics work best on the beach; strong patterns get lost against sea and sand.
- If you want Dar Pomorza in the frame, meet early, before the tour groups arrive.
- Avoid the first week of July if you want easy accommodation and quiet beaches.
- Combine Gdynia with Sopot or Gdańsk in one multi-location session; the train takes a few minutes between them.

Where are the best photo spots in Gdynia?
Kościuszko Square with Dar Pomorza, the seafront promenade, the Kamienna Góra viewpoint, the modernist centre around Świętojańska Street, Redłowo beach, and the Orłowo pier and cliff. The centre and promenade are a short walk apart, and Orłowo is two stops away on the SKM train.
How much does a photographer in Gdynia cost?
Sessions start from PLN 500 for 30 minutes, PLN 750 for a couple and PLN 800 for a family session. The final price depends on the photographer, date, time of day and duration, and is stated in your proposal.
Can we photograph the sunrise over the sea in Gdynia?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to choose Gdynia. The coast faces east, so the sun rises out of the bay; the Orłowo pier, Redłowo beach and the seafront promenade are the places to see it.
Do we need a permit to shoot on the Orłowo pier?
Usually not for a private session in a public space, but rules for using the pier and any seasonal entry fee can change. Check the current terms with the pier’s operator before your session.
Where can we shoot in Gdynia if it rains?
The arcades and doorways of the modernist buildings in the city centre and the covered parts of the waterfront work best. If the rain is heavy, your photographer will suggest a new time, and how rescheduling works is set out in your proposal.
Can we combine Gdynia with Sopot and Gdańsk?
Yes, as a multi-location session from PLN 1,400. A popular plan is dawn in Orłowo, then the Sopot pier or the waterfront in Gdańsk; the SKM train connects all three. For family ideas across the country, see our family photography guide. For proposals in the area, see our Gdańsk proposal guide.
