Sopot is the seaside resort between Gdańsk and Gdynia, with Europe's longest wooden pier, a wide sandy beach and a pedestrian street running from the station straight down to the sea. The beach faces east across the Gulf of Gdańsk, so the sun rises over the water, which is rare in Poland.
The other side of Sopot is the hills and beech forests of the Tricity Landscape Park, starting a short walk from the beach, with the Forest Opera amphitheatre in the middle. One session can give you sea, resort architecture and forest without long transfers.
Sopot is a favourite for proposals with a photographer, couple photoshoots, wedding portrait sessions and maternity sessions on the beach. It combines easily with Gdańsk and Gdynia; for seaside proposal ideas see where to propose in Poland.
Photo spots — Sopot
- 01
Sopot Pier (Molo)
A wooden pier more than half a kilometre long, with a marina at its end and views back to the beach, the Grand Hotel and the whole bay. The boards running out to sea make a strong leading line, and at the far end the wind does your hair and veil for you. In season the pier is busy, especially in the afternoon and evening.
- Best time
- Sunrise and early morning, when it is nearly empty. In winter also during the day.
- Access
- At the bottom of Monciak, about 10 minutes' walk from Sopot SKM station. Entry is paid in season; check current prices and hours with the pier operator.
- 02
The beach at sunrise
The wide sandy beach runs both ways from the pier, towards Gdańsk and Gdynia. Because it faces east, at dawn the sun comes straight up out of the sea and the first light rakes across the pier. In summer it is the only time the sand is free of windbreaks and deckchairs. A natural setting for a barefoot maternity session.
- Best time
- From sunrise to about 8:00. In June the sun rises before 4:30, in September around 6:00.
- Access
- Beach entrances every few hundred metres along the promenade. Sand: take off your photo shoes and bring flip-flops.
- 03
Monciak (ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino)
Sopot's main pedestrian street runs down from St George's Church towards the pier, lined with colourful houses, cafés and a resort feel. It is lively by day and night, but in the early morning it is empty, and the pale façades bounce soft light onto faces.
- Best time
- Early morning, before the terraces open. Blue hour in the evening, with a crowd in the background.
- Access
- Starts a few minutes' walk from Sopot SKM station and runs straight down to the pier.
- 04
The Crooked House (Krzywy Domek)
A building with wavy, melting walls and curved windows on Monciak, one of the most photographed buildings in Poland. It makes a playful, light-hearted frame to open the session, but someone is almost always taking a picture in front of it, so come early.
- Best time
- Morning, before 9:00; the façade is best lit before noon.
- Access
- On ul. Bohaterów Monte Cassino, a few minutes from the SKM station.
- 05
The Grand Hotel and the pier area
The historic hotel from the 1920s stands right by the pier on the beach side. Its pale, stately façade and the promenade in front make an elegant resort frame, especially for wedding outfits. Plac Zdrojowy, the lighthouse and the spa house are close by.
- Best time
- Morning, when the sun from the sea lights the façade. Evening for the illumination.
- Access
- Next to the pier entrance. The hotel grounds are private: shoot from the promenade and beach, and ask the hotel before any session inside.
- 06
The forest around the Forest Opera (Opera Leśna)
An open-air amphitheatre in the forested hills above the town, surrounded by the beech woods of the Tricity Landscape Park. Tall beeches, paths and soft light between the trees give a calm, green feel quite unlike the beach, and golden in autumn. The amphitheatre itself is usually closed outside events, so the session takes place in the forest around it.
- Best time
- Afternoon, May–June and October. In summer, avoid concert days.
- Access
- About 20 minutes uphill on foot from the centre, or a few minutes by car. Forest paths, muddy after rain.

Seasons
May, June and September are the best months: warm, long days and far fewer people than in the school holidays. July and August are peak season: the beach and Monciak are full and central parking is near impossible, so sessions are planned for sunrise. October brings golden forest around the Forest Opera and empty beaches. Winter has its own charm: an empty beach, sometimes ice at the shoreline and a pier without crowds.
Time of day
Sunrise is the key time in Sopot: the sun comes up over the bay and the beach and pier are empty. In the evening the sun sets behind the town and hills, so the sea gets soft pink light but no sun in the frame. At midday, move to the forest by the Forest Opera. A sunrise or weekend slot may cost more; this is stated in your proposal.
Weather
By the sea there is almost always wind, and it is cooler on the beach than in town; even in July bring a warm layer for the evening. In spring sea fog can roll over the bay and hide the pier, but it gives soft, atmospheric pictures. Summer heat can end in a thunderstorm, and autumn brings storms with big waves, when you keep well back from the water. Your photographer watches the forecast and, if needed, suggests the forest or another date.
Getting there
SKM commuter trains link Sopot with Gdańsk (about 20 minutes from Gdańsk Główny) and Gdynia, and Sopot station is at the top of Monciak. Gdańsk airport is about half an hour away by car. The beach, pier, Monciak, the Crooked House and the Grand Hotel are all within a few hundred metres, so you walk the session; the Forest Opera is easier by car. In summer central parking is hard and paid, so come by train.
Good to know
Entry to the pier is paid in season, and the operator sets its own rules for photo sessions there; check them before your date. A private session on the beach and in the forest usually needs no permission, but in summer mind the bathers in lifeguarded zones. Sopot is close to Gdańsk airport, so drone flights are restricted; check the current zones on the official drone map. See starting prices or ask about your date.
- For a sea sunrise, meet 20–30 minutes before sunrise; the best colours come before the sun.
- Bring a warm layer and something to wipe your feet after shooting on the sand.
- Light, flowing fabrics work best on the beach; the wind moves them beautifully.
- In summer come by SKM train rather than by car; seaside parking in season wastes time.
- If the wind is too strong, move part of the session to the forest by the Forest Opera.
- Check current fees and rules with the pier operator before going on the pier with a photographer.

Wind by the sea is normal and often helps, moving dresses and hair. In a gale or storm your photographer will move part of the session to the forest by the Forest Opera or suggest another date. The rescheduling terms are set out in your proposal.
